Thanksgiving thoughts from our very good friend, and sometime guest blogger, Heather Kalinowski!!!

Thanksgiving is a week from today and it’s tradition in my family, and for many families, to make a list of all the things you are thankful for in your life. Well, I’m sure our pets are at the top of all of our lists! Our furry friends stick by us through thick and thin the whole year long, so what better time to show our appreciation than during the one holiday dedicated to saying ‘thank you’?

I have two wonderful dogs who have been the most faithful companions to me and my husband over the last five years. They have been with us through courtship and marriage, though four moves and many adventures, and most recently through the addition of a beautiful baby boy to the family. I am thankful for them every day. Here are just a few reasons why:

• They have been so great at adjusting to life with a newborn in the house. They could have decided to wreak havoc but instead have simply expressed curiosity in the new addition and have been patient with the changes that have occurred.

• Jackson has been instrumental in getting me out of the house, even though I could easily stay inside all day every day focusing on the baby. He reminds me that he needs to be walked and I’m thankful that I am forced to get some fresh air every once in a while.

• No matter what time of day it is or what may be going on, my dogs will cuddle on the couch or in bed with me, no questions asked. They love nothing more than to take a nap snuggled up as close to me as possible. I love that.

• We have been on the road a lot lately traveling to relatives’ houses to show off the baby. The dogs are great travel partners and calmly lay in the back while we’re driving. They never get carsick or chew on the car seats like I’ve seen with other dogs.

• Both dogs have their health, and that is most amazing for Ava, who had a serious health scare a year ago, but has been progressively improving to the point where today she is on the lowest dosage of her medication possible.

Whether it’s something trivial like cuddles on the couch or important like health and wellness, the holiday season is a great time of year to sit back and be thankful for everything our pets mean to us.
