I never did like can tuna anyway!!!

Corsa

"Ask any mermaid you happen to see? What's the best tuna?........", "Charlie knows, the best tasting tuna is......", when it comes to your cat NEITHER!!

Surprised? So was I. Well at least years ago I was surprised when my vet had told me NEVER to feed "people" tuna to my cat. I never questioned why, I have this habit of listening to what my vet says much of the time without question so....I never fed either of my cats tuna.

Lately while reading other cat blogs that I follow, Facebook comments and reading various updates on Twitter, I am reading more and more about people serving their cats tuna, for purposes of this blog when I am referring to tuna I am referring to "people" tuna, "human" or "hooman" (if you are an "anipal") tuna, NOT tuna flavored cat food, got it? Good. Now that we are on the same page, STOP FEEDING YOUR CAT PEOPLE TUNA....NOW!

Why?

"Cats can develop yellow fat disease from having too much tuna" (from http://www.connollyac.com/) "Yellow fat disease occurs most commonly in young, overweight male and female cats with inappropriate diets." "Yellow fat disease is an inflammation of the fat tissue in the body due to a deficiency of Vitamin E. Dr.Richard Brancato (a Clearwater, Florida veterinarian) says "although it is (tuna) high in protein, tuna lacks sufficient amounts of certain amino acids, mainly taurine, to maintain feline health. There is insufficient calcium to balance the phosphorus; the ratio in canned tuna is 1-to-14.8 This results in bone disease."

From Yahoo.com "the most you should do is to use the WATER that is drained off from the can of tuna (not the OIL...for another reason), and drizzle it over their dry cat food once or twice a MONTH. They'll think they died and went to cat heaven...but without the danger".Another vet from Yahoo.com said "I've had to treat numerous cats over the years for pretty severe enteritis resulting from eating tuna meat. One of my own babies got so ill from it when someone else left it sitting out on the counter for 5 minutes while he turned his back to take a phone call, that I had to put her on IV fluids for 2 days, in addition to intestinal medications"

"Tuna-FLAVORED food is okay.....Tuna meat.......BAD! How many cats do you know that go swimming in the ocean to catch tuna and eat it as part of their natural diet?"

'Nuff said.

We give our cats tuna once in a while and we haven't had any problems. Maybe it is the fact that we have several cats so they don't get a lot of tuna at a time. They also get their regular food too. I wouldn't give them just a diet of tuna.

So... I get my cat shouldn't eat tuna in place of cat food, but I'd like to have known how much is bad. Whenever I make tuna salad, before I put onions or mayo, I give them some. And I've been doing so for a long time. All 3 are in great shape, and I plan to ask my vet about this when we take them sometime soon.

Hi Lura! What a pretty name! You are exactly right. I have also read that an OCCASIONAL treat of tuna (which to me would equal a tiny, tiny bit) is ok......but....if it were me I wouldn't give it. I would just do what was suggested in the blog about taking the water from the can of tuna and pouring it over some dry food. Thanks so much for taking the time to read and to comment!

Hi Melissa! Thanks so much for reading and for commenting! It is truly appreciated. Let me ask you this...how often do you make tuna salad? If it is daily or even weekly sharing some of it (yes I know, before the mayo and onions) with your cats may be too much. How much are you "sharing?" I remember when I had my first cat and I asked about tuna the vet told me to not give tuna at all!!! My current vet says the same. I am interested to hear what your vet has to say about it. It is just as easy to take the water from the can of tuna and pour some of that on your cats' dry food (and a lot safer, remember there is mercury in tuna as well).....your kitties will think they are in Kitty Nirvana!

Mrs. Gittleman, I found this very interesting. My mother has been feeding her cat the "juice" from tune for a while now. I forwarded your blog to her and I'm sure she will start following it regularly, as will I. I was wondering if in your research, you found any causes or occurrences where dogs had issues to people tuna? I have four dogs, that go crazy at the first turn of the can opener on a can of tuna. I'd hate to think I've been doing them wrong all this time, but I'd hate not to know if it was bad for them.

Hi Desiree! So nice to meet you! I am THRILLED that you stopped by and that you will be following my blog! Welcome! Thank you for also forwarding it on to our Mother. Wow you really got me on the question about dogs and tuna. I honestly do not know. We had one dog when I was young and now I have a Sheltie. My Sheltie is my first dog. I have always just had a cat prior to him. I do know that a dogs digestive system is far less sensitive than a cats. ( I can attest to that from my dog eating my cell phone lol) Biologically they are different. Are there any dog lovers out there that can answer this one?
