This story got a little sadder last week when the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife & Fisheries, basically sentenced Tony the Truck Stop Tiger to at least one more year as a roadside attraction!!! THAT SUCKS!!!

Village of Grosse Tete, La. —
La. Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries issued a permit in recent days allowing Tiger Truck Stop owner Michael Sandlin can keep his nine-year old Siberian-Bengal tiger, named Tony, on his premises in the Grosse Tete area of Iberville Parish through 2011.
Tony, who lives in a cage near Interstate 10 and Sandlin’s truck stop, has been the subject of intense controversy generated by national animal rights organizations over the last two years.
The Internet is filled with organizations demanding that Sandlin release Tony to any one of the Big Cat sanctuaries in the country, most located in Florida.
Sandlin’s tiger is the last privately owned exotic big cat in the state, and despite state legislation prohibiting ownership of potentially dangerous animals such as tigers, the truck stop owner was able to keep the animal due to a grandfather cause in the ruling. As long as Sandlin continues to cooperate with LDWLF permit rules, he can keep the tiger. The permit issued recently gives him permission to keep Tony at the truck stop through 2011 as long as he continues to follow animal healthcare and public safety procedures set forth.
The new permit has continued outrage and cries to boycott the truck stop. It has brought some national ridicule of the state and the parish for allowing the tiger to be kept at the Grosse Tete facility. However, all ordinances and state permits have been legally followed by officials and Sandlin since the original 2006 legislation.
The truck stop owner insists he has compassion for his tiger and other tigers he has owned in previous years at the facility and has given away to other shelters or animal habitats in the past. He also has said he will consider placing the tiger in an animal habitat or shelter once the animal becomes too old to manage at the truck stop.
He said Tony is happy and is under good health supervision and is not a danger to the public.

Tony the Tiger really needs to be with more tigers and in his natural surroundings, where he can have room to run and maybe even have a girlfriend. It's wrong to keep him locked in something to small for him. How would that person like to be locked up in something to small for him.

The owner says the public is not in any danger. Duh! Us people who are upset are not complaining about that. Its for the cruelty that is being done to Tony that were worried about.

How do you make sense of one State like Louisiana. A State that for almost 11 years, thinks it is ok to keep an Endangered Tiger in Captivity. In Captivity in a Small Concrete Cage used as a Gimmick.. as a Roadside Attraction at a Truckstop. This Tiger, this beautiful and soon to be a Rare Species is being used as a Humerous Sideshow.I am attaching a Recent picture of Tony, that has so far been Enlarged and Viewed by Three Prof. Vets and One Bigcat Expert. All who have come to the same Conclusion that it appears that Tony could be suffering from Kidney Failure, and yet that whole State , Tony's Vet and all the Corruption that Surrounds it have TURNED A BLIND EYE ON TONY. There is a special kinda hell reserved for Sandlin and kind! An Indian legend says: "When a human dies there is a bridge they must cross to enter into Heaven. At the head of the bridge waits every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based on what they know of this person, decide which humans may cross the bridge...and which are turned away."

Mr.Sandlin and all that allow this to continue are animal abusers. Tony is exploited in so many ways. The people that love him are the ones that are fighting for him to go to a loving sanctuary. GODSPEED- Tony we love you.

POOR POOR TONY TEN YEARS IN A CONCRETE HELL-HOLE AND NOW ANOTHER YEAR TO FACE;; MAKES ME ASHAMED TO BE A PART OF THE HUMAN RACE!!!! THE SCUMBAGS THAT KEEP ALLOWING THIS TO HAPPEN SHOULD BE PUT IN WITH TONY ONE AT A TIME; MIND YOU HE WOULD NEED TREATMENT IF HE ATE ANY OF THAT BAD MEAT !!!!!

I have been saddened by the inability of Louisiana to wake up and see the situation for what it is--a den of cruelty and exploitation. The whole world has protested this and yet that state insists on keeping this poor tiger in these despicable conditions. I also raise my voice and ask the authorities to give Tony the proper sanctuary that he so deserves. I don't think he has much time left, if what some people have said is true.

You know, Tony could certainly use a lot more space, and some opportunity for exercise, but we're not really being given many details. We don't know if his owner is providing enrichment for him, or anything else about how he is cared for. He looks healthy. It sounds like all he needs is a bigger enclosure, maybe one with some trees and bushes, and a water pool. Why not have everyone band together to help his owner build that, instead of trying to take him away from someone who cares about him, and has kept him healthy? When people try to sway your emotions instead of providing facts, be suspicious. Animal rights groups want to take animals away from us (and often think they're better off dead)--always ask questions, and never rush to judgments in cases like this.

Thank You for posting Tony's story. Right now his court case is at a stand still in appeals court and I can only hope that people do not forget that he is still there waiting to be rescued.

If the owner of Tony really loved this animal as he says he does than why wont he allow him to go with other tigers and be free from that cage. This is one very selfish person who only thinks of this animal as an attraction. Shame on him! Let him go and sit in a cage for a day, bet he wouldnt last 10 minutes. Coward!!
