... Sometimes Love Really is a BITCH

Way back in September of 2010 we told you about a HAUTE little movie that wasn't playing anywhere, well after nearly two years it's still not playing anywhere but on Hulu, and nothing is HAUTER than that!!!



My Dog Tulip, is based on a book of the same name originally published in 1956, My Dog Tulip by author J.R. Ackerley a memoir of his relationship with Tulip, a German shepherd he rescued and who, eventually, appears to have taken over his life.

When we first talked about the film, we mentioned that we hadn't seen it, and were rather hoping it would either come to a theater here in Miami, become available on DVD, the internet or some other medium, a bit more conveniently located than The Film Forum, in NYC. None of those things ever happened, but through the magic of the WWW, someone at New Yorker Films heard about our mention of My Dog Tulip on HorN Pets, and sent us a press kit which included a copy of the film, now you can share our JOY!!!

Beautifully animated and featuring the voices of Academy Award winner Christopher Plummer, the late Lynn Redgrave, and Isabella Rossellini, My Dog Tulip is a bitter sweet retrospective account of author J.R. Ackerley's relationship with his adopted Alsatian bitch, Tulip.

The distinguished British man of letters, Ackerley hardly thought of himself as a dog lover when well into middle age, he came to adopt Tulip... a beautiful, yet intolerable 18-month-old German Shepard. To his surprise, she turned out to be the love of his life, the "ideal friend" he had been searching for in vain for so many years. In vivid and sometimes startling detail, the film reveals Tulip's sassy, often erratic behavior (and very canine tastes) and Ackerley's fumbling but determined efforts to ensure an existence of perfect happiness for her.

A profound and subtle meditation on the strangeness that lies at the heart of all relationships, My Dog Tulip was written, directed and animated by award-winning filmmakers Paul and Sandra Fierlinger and is the first animated feature ever to be entirely hand drawn and painted utilizing paperless computer technology.

This is one of the most beautiful films we've ever seen on so many levels, the animation is spectacular, and for those of us of a certain age, somehow nostalgic and comforting, Christopher Plummer's narration is spellbinding, and of course the story of one mans unexpected relationship with his dog, is a story known and shared by of all of us who have ever had, and loved an animal.

This is not a Disney dog movie, you probably don't want to watch with the really young youngsters!!!
