It seems as though Haute or Not Pets as neglected an entire category of Super HAUTE Pets, REPTILES... that ends today!!!

The HorN Pets Gang is thrilled to introduce you to John F. Taylor (more about him later) pet reptile expert, and his friend Tigra!!!

Tigra, our female Leopard Gecko Eublepharis macularius came to us as a rescue because her parents were moving and they could no longer keep her. She was healthy which is unusual for a rescue. My wife was surprised at the girth of her tail as at the time she was unfamiliar with reptiles. I explained to her Leopard Geckos give new meaning to the song “Baby got back”.

The reason for such a large tail is that it stores nutrient reserves for lean times when meals aren’t as plentiful in the wild. A full size tail is generally a good indicator of health in Leopard Geckos E. macularius. One night during feeding she heard a buzzing in the enclosure. Wondering what this noise could possibly be, she peered into the enclosure and saw that Tigra was shaking her tail like a Rattlesnake and she thought that she was having a seizure.

This behavior is the same one that male humans experience when they first meet a woman whom they find attractive they stumble over their words etc. Leopard Geckos vibrate their tails when they are excited. Males especially do this when a female is introduced to their enclosure.

Leopard Geckos Eublepharis macularius appear as they might be a true lounge lizard when compared with other lizard species. They are generally speaking not active during the day and tend to lay around the enclosure not really moving that much. But when the lights go down look out, they are ready to get their groove on then. This is this when they are on the hunt for mates and food depending on the time of year. Make no mistake even with that junk in her trunk she can move when it comes to feeding.

Tigra is also anal retentive about keeping her house clean and developed an area on her own as a defecatorium so as to not soil her house. This goes without mentioning the fact that she eats her own shed skin rather than leaving it lying around the enclosure like a teenager who leaves their clothes right where they fell.

One of the coolest things Tigra does and something I’m jealous of, she licks her eyeballs. Even though she has eyelids which most gecko species do not she insists on licking her eyes clean. John F Taylor in his own words:

I have been personally involved with animals ever since I can remember. My most infamous saying is “If it’s got scales or a tail then chances are I know something about it.” I have been involved in the pet industry in general for over a decade and while my focus is mainly reptiles I have held several positions with in the pet trade including dog trainer, fish specialist, and I even worked at a large feed store for awhile. My appreciation of nature itself comes from my dad teaching me about the wild animals that we share the world with and why they are all important.

John will be bringing us lots of information about reptiles, and explaining they make such HAUTE pets for small spaces, John will be happy to answers all your reptile questions too!!!
